Digital Learning Day 2016

Digital Learning Day is one of those opportunities students and their teachers have to share about why this is an important day to recognize and why digital tools are important in regards to our learning.  So my students created Kidblog posts and we are using Twitter this week also to share how and why we use digital tools.

This afternoon I asked my students to think about why this might be an important day to celebrate and what are the ways we use digital tools.  I was really impressed and also felt validated about why digital tools are important.  Here are some of the responses that were shared today.

  1. We can have conversations with other people in the world.
  2. We can share our learning with the world.
  3. We show how we use them in a safe, kind and responsible way.
  4. They make your brain think more things and they help you learn.
  5. They help us to have conversations with other people.  We connect.
  6. You learn how to use digital tools.
  7. They help you think better.  They help you think when you don’t know what to do.
  8. They want you to learn.
  9. We celebrate this day because we want other people to know what we are doing.
  10. Our parents know what we are learning.
  11. They are fun.
  12. We help each other and collaborate.

Learning is for everyone and technology gives us all a voice.  Digital tools and platforms have enriched and engaged my own learning and that of both my students and their parents.  The communication is ongoing, fluid and just by offering a variety of platforms to share, I am also modeling explicitly “how to” use tools in safe, kind and responsible ways.  Parents want to be informed and engaged.  They are important stakeholders in their child’s education.  So today was another opportunity to model and celebrate the value and excitement me, my students and families have in regards to learning, but also how we share and reflect what we are exploring.

A Celebration of Learning: Engaging Families Inside and Out!

One of the things I enjoy most about my job are the endless opportunities I have to celebrate and involve not only my students, but their families.  Family engagement is very important for all students and their success in school.  I continue to try to find ways for my families to not only engage, but also celebrate the wonderful learning that is transpiring daily inside and outside of Kindergarten.unnamed

Learning is really an amazing opportunity to involve and engage others around you.  Through our ability to connect, share and reflect what we understand we not only develop a deeper meaning of what we are learning, but we also get excited and want to share.  When we share our thinking is challenged and we are inspired by others feedback. Celebrating school, learning and each other is so much fun and inspiring.  Just simply highlighting an idea on a blog, using Twitter to “tweet” an idea can bring lots of feedback.

This morning we had our first celebration of learning.  It was wonderful!  Watching families engage and connect with their child and their learning is such a gift.  I appreciated all the support that my families offered ahead of time in helping me set up a breakfast buffet and also their commitment to attending and being present and sharing with their child and other families. One of my parents was not able to attend so the family used FaceTime on their phone to connect.  One of my students was able to share her work virtually, in a face to face way using a phone!  This is an example of how we , as educators must continue to think about creative ways to engage our parents.  They want to be a part of their child’s learning.  Technology can help make this happen! DSCF4582

Connecting and developing positive relationships is really important as an educator.  This is always my first priority when I begin each year. The relationships I develop are important and critical for the success of each of my students.  Parents need to feel engaged and also a part of their child’s daily life in school.  As an educator I have found many synchronous and asynchronous tools that can help with this.  Recently one of my students visited an aquarium and was able to post photographs of the different sea animals he saw.  This was an opportunity for a family to connect and share a learning experience outside of Kindergarten.  When the student had an opportunity to share he was able to articulate what he saw and facilitate questions that other students had.  Later on another student was able to post a compliment on his Kidblog. This is so motivating for students.  unnamed-4They want to connect and respond when others recognize their efforts and discoveries.

I continue to think of ways that I can connect with my students, their families and extended families.  Through our connection we develop positive relationships that support learning for their child.  I am grateful to have so many technological tools to begin to demonstrate alongside my families and their children how technology can be used in meaningful ways to engage, enhance and enrich their child’s education. Bringing families together to celebrate and connect is what is important. Learning is for everyone.  How are you engaging your students, families and extended families?

 

 

 

 

The First 6 Days @vermontkkids123

Hurray for Kindergarten!  I am so grateful and happy to be able to go to work each day where I am able to make a difference.  This year has come quickly and already I am amazed at all of the opportunities that have appeared for myself, my parents and my students.

We are connecting!

Modeling “how to” be a safe, kind and responsible citizen is vital.  As an educator of young children these ideas are easy and fun to thread throughout our busy days together in regards to everything.  I also have opportunities to model ‘how to” connect online as well.  Twitter has given me and my students lots of opportunities to share things we are experiencing.  We have had conversations with Kindergarten children in New York, Vermont, South Korea and Wisconsin.  My students and their families with my guidance are able to experience the value of a ‘tweet” and how it can enhance and connect our learning with others. Through my modeling my students and their families experience how social media can be used in meaningful ways in regards to learning.  This is important.  I want my families alongside of me as I begin to share how we connect.

Skype is also being used already with parents who are calling us to say hello and ask what we are doing during the day.  By using familiar faces I begin to model how this synchronous tool can be used to connect and have conversations.  Through parent participation they begin to “see” how this tool can be used.  Again I invite my parents of my students because I want to be explicit about how the tool might be used and the positive impact on learning.

Blogging about our busy days together has really helped my parents and my students begin to experience and reflect on our learning.  I have already had a couple of comments!  Our class blog provides another way for my students to have conversations with each other and their families about what they are exploring inside and outside of Kindergarten.  We have a shelfari where we keep track of the books we read as well as a map of the world!  The map is especially awesome because it offers my students another opportunity to get a global perspective about where we are in the world, but also that others are interested in what we are learning.  Through our sharing others will get inspired and have their thinking challenged.  As an educator I welcome this continually.  Through this type of reflection I grow as a professional, a learner and become more transparent and open in regards to how I think about learning.

Face to face and turn and talks happen in an almost seamless fashion throughout the day.  My students are beginning to understand how listen to understand and offer their perspective through discussions around books, caterpillars we find outside and through collaboration when creating structures out of a variety of materials.

We are so lucky to have a Smartboard and document camera. My students have experienced in only 6 days how these tools can enhance our learning.  Through our ability to interact with these tools we are able to reflect on our thinking and share what we understand.jpg

We are collaborating!

Through Twitter we have made a new connection with a 6th grade class in Vermont.  We are learning about global citizenship and how to “Tweet” responses to specific questions we are asked.

We have learning buddies in our school!  We connect weekly with them presently and share books.  In the future we will be using Google Hangout as a way to share a story that we read aloud.  Our learning buddies model how to be kind and caring as well as model ways for us to engage in books. we also follow them on Twitter too!

Through AirServer and iPads we are able to create and share our understanding of new concepts we explore.

DSCF4228This is an awesome way for young children to begin to learn “how to” create letters and numbers.  We begin by exploring the different ways to make lines.

Through Twitter we create tweets about our busy days together.  It always begins with;”What do you want to share with the world today?”

We are creating different ways to write our names using a variety of materials.  We are creating illustrations that tell stories so we can share our ideas.

My students are learning ‘how to” collaborate and work together to build structures and negotiate ways to be inclusive with our play.  We are having conversations about what we can do as a learning community to help others.  My students have amazing ideas.  Stay tuned for what we decide to solve together to make a difference for others!

Kindergarten is the most wonderful place to be, really!  We are learning through our exploration and discovery of things we find in nature, through our conversations with others and the many stories we read.  Our classroom is a place where we make a difference everyday for each other.  We are modeling together alongside others too!

I look forward to this week because we will be exploring voicethread, Kidblog and celebrating International Dot Day!  All of these are ways that any educator can use with their students to bring learning to life. Only 6 days and look at what can happen!  All it takes is an idea and the willingness to reach out and say hello!

Kindergarten Mentors

As I am finishing up last minute things in my classroom today I was thinking about all the different ways my students have been mentors this past year with each other, helping model how to tweet and blog with other classrooms as well as sharing their expertise with adults.

Last spring a teacher approached me and wanted to observe how I use technology with my students and was also interested in how I use the SMARTboard as well. I asked one of my students to provide additional support and more 1:1 time after our meeting.  As I watched and listened to the conversation I was really impressed with not only how comfortable my student was with the SMART technology, but the problem solving that took place during this 1:1 support time with a teacher.  I loved seeing the teacher take notes as she asked questions about not only the operation of the board, but what happens when things go wrong and do not work.  Watching my student navigate through how to solve problems as they arise was really wonderful.  k

I am not only proud of all my students, but this experience reminded me of the importance of  self direction, problem solving and critical thinking.  All of these ideas were happening at once and being facilitated by one of my kindergarten students.  As a teacher of young children I have a unique opportunity to model explicitly how synchronous and asynchronous tools can be integrated in a seamless way in regards to learning.  Once my students understood how this tool works, how we use it, then they are able to create and design their ideas as well and make contributions.  Through our contributions and being able to teach and share what we know with others we get inspired, experience positive self esteem and make connections.  This student was empowered because she was able to make a contribution, help another teacher and engage in conversations that challenged her thinking and helped her reflect on what she has learned.  For this amazing teacher, my friend, I think about what great professional development this was for her!

Literacy Enriched: iPads, Google Hangouts and AirServer

One of the things I really enjoy about being a Kindergarten teacher is teaching my students how to read.  Really, learning to read is a very complicated process, but with rich literature, explicit teaching, meaningful use and integration of technology, connections and opportunities for conversations between students begin to develop. Students not only develop the skills they need to read, but learn how to use what they have learned, to help them continue on their journey.

This month we are exploring the world of Dr. Seuss.  My students had an awesome opportunity to connect with other students in Wisconsin via a Google Hangout as part of Read Across America.  It was wonderful.  Our friends in Wisconsin did an awesome job doing book talks about a few books written by Theodore Seuss.  My students were able to ask questions and give feedback about what they saw and heard.  This was a great way to begin to excite my students about our new author study.  I asked my students what they noticed.  My students shared that they noticed that the students read with expression,  their voices changed when they read, they read well, they were also taking breaths.  As a teacher this was wonderful because their responses reflected many of the skills and literacy experiences we have created and explored together. lf

Later we used AirServer to share another Dr. Seuss story on our SMARTboard.  Wow!  My students all had wonderful smiles and were making connections through conversation as we watched and listened to the story. I so enjoy the expressions my students make when they are connecting and engaging with books.

Afterwards we had another opportunity to have a conversation about the story.  When I asked my students what they noticed this is what they had to say:

*the voice paused at commas

*we heard rhyming words

*it had lots of digraphs

*every word has a vowel

*we saw important words and sight words

*we use iPads to read books

*AirServer helps us read books

I am so inspired about how AirServer and iPads can capture and enhance the essence of what my students understand.  Their observations give me immediate feedback about what they understand and through the connections they make, I learn what has resonated with them in regards to their learning.  It is also wonderful at how young children can connect with a variety of text and make meaningful connections through rich, interactive, literacy experiences. The phototechnology gives voice and highlights many of the skills we explore during our reader’s workshop time.

The technological tools that I used were AirServer, SMARTboard, Google Hangout and iPads to enrich a read aloud.  Even if you had 1 of these tools, your students experience with a text will be enriched.

AirServer is really a wonderful tool because you can remotely access what is on your iPad.  This helps demonstrate what is possible.

Google Hangout is available through Google Plus.  This is an awesome way to connect your students with others to have conversations.  You will be surprised at the connections they make.  Google Hangouts through video can have up to 10 people at one time, so the possibilities are endless here when it comes to audience.

Learning to read is magical.  I really enjoy the endless expressions my students make when they begin to realize they are reading words and interpreting illustrations.  This is where I can really help enhance what my students discover.  Learning is for everyone.  Technology gives all my students a voice.

Connecting As An Educator: What it looks and sounds like @kkidsinvt

This past week was an amazing one in Kindergarten!  I am so excited and thrilled at how my students, their parents and others are reaching out to connect, share and use technology in meaningful ways that capture what we are learning.  This is happening in a variety of ways.

Last week we visited the food shelf in our community and dropped off food that we had collected.  My students reminded me that we needed to blog about our trip because others would be interested in how we made a difference.  When I asked; “How will they know?” My students shared that they see the triangles blinking on our map of the world on our class blog and that is how they know.  Wonderful!  The gadget on our class blog gives us feedback about where in the world people are from who are interested in Kindergarten Life.

I had a wonderful opportunity on Friday where I was invited to be a part of a class  discussion at Clemson University in South Carolina, facilitated by Ryan D. Visser, Ph.D.  So during my lunch time I was able to give an overview of how and why I use technology with my students, families and myself.  I was also able to share about what I am seeing in terms of engagement and how my students are interacting with technology and the positive impact it is having on their learning.  This was a great way for me to connect with others and have a meaningful conversation via Skype.  Ryan and I connected on twitter.

I needed to check in with a parent and thought of this while at my computer.  I noticed she was online(thanks to Skype) So I was able to call and have a quick conversation.  This was easy and seamless because Skype is part of my classroom culture.  We started using Skype on the 1st day of Kindergarten.  My point here is that once you begin to use technological tools in authentic ways that enhance connection, reflection and transparency, you begin to transform and your learning is open to others and others will begin to connect and collaborate through your learning.

Twitter is on all day in my classroom and my students are great about sharing what they want to tweet. Social media is used and part of my classroom culture because we use it to reflect, share and connect what we are learning and experiencing.  Last week we were beginning to read the live feed from others that we follow and my students began asking how do we tell them we are doing that too.

We are also part of a Flat Classroom project and we created a padlet about what the view is like from outside our window.  My students reminded me to tweet this and email this to their parents so that others can post their window view. This is another easy way to connect and share what you are learning.  I got this idea because another teacher from Ma. contacted via Skype over the weekend and asked me to post on her padlet.  We connected through Skype play last year.  Again connections are everywhere!  They are active and inactive, but they are always connections.

One of my students parents called us during snack time via Skype to say hello and ask about our day.  This is a part of our culture, not a disruption.  My students are excited to have conversations with others about what we are doing in Kindergarten.  Through authentic opportunities to engage, we connect and get inspired because we are wondering what is next.

Try twitter, Skype, blogging, create a padlet and connect. Showcase something you are doing with your students.  For me it is always about the learning, but most importantly about how I am going to share my story with others.  Through sharing we get inspired, make connections and gain insight about learning.

I want my students and their families to feel a part of Kindergartenlife.  Learning is fluid, ongoing and exciting.  Communication is constant and helps build strong relationships which impacts learning in endless, positive ways.

Tools That Help To Transform: Being Intentional

As an educator I want to be intentional about my actions within and outside of the classroom in regards to learning.  I feel that the more transparent, we, educators are about our practice, the more intentional our work becomes.

Just in the past few months I have begun to transform even more.  The transformation is intentional and sometimes it just “sneaks up” on me!  The technological tools available are all key and vital when it comes to any kind of transformation.

What a wonderful week I had with my Kindergarten students!  This time of year is so exciting because I get to see my students become more independent and watch as they navigate using the many technologies that we have been exploring and discovering together during the year.  Wow!  As an educator I am seeing some amazing ah ha’s and uses of some of the tools that are a part of our Kindergarten culture.  I have listed a few examples below.

1.  Twitter!  My students have opportunities all day to tweet about what they think is important.  This past week a couple of my students told me that they were “ready” to start typing the tweets themselves.  I asked ‘”How do you know?” They told me because they are reading.  They also shared because they know that they have to use a period, a capital letter and leave spaces between their words.  Oh yes!!!  This is a reflection of the many things we explore during our reader’s and writer’s workshop time.  This is amazing that my students see the connections here with not only that “they are ready” to tweet, but what they need in their tweet and that it can be shared with others.

2.  Air Server!  This has been a wonderful tool to explore with my students.  During our number corner time the leader of the day and a few others are able to connect through our SMART board and share their mathematical ideas!  Two of our Math Habits of Mind are Changing Your Thinking and Multiple air serverRepresentations.  By using iPads remotely my students are able to share the many different ways a number looks like!  If they have a different idea or Change Their Thinking, this is valued and recognized as a habit that all mathematicians do.  In order to learn we need to Change Our Thinking(make mistakes).  The self confidence of all my students is high because they all want to be able to share and collaborate using the interactive tools.  Interactive tools that promote deep thinking and collaboration as well as risk taking.

math3.  iPads!  I love that I am able to have iPads available for my students.  Their uses are endless, really!  During a dice game a couple of my students thought that instead of writing their numbers on paper they could write on an iPad.  When I spoke with them further it occurred to me that paper rips easily and it is hard to change your thinking.  An iPad makes it easy to try and try again.  I was also able to see how naturally my students offer to help one another too, not just writing numbers, but navigating with the iPad.

As I continue to model a variety of technological tools in a very intentional way, my students will do the same.  They begin to see and discover the value they can have in regards to their learning.

These are questions I find myself asking over and over again…..

My Kindergarten Students…..

Kindergarten is really an amazing place.  I am in my 5th year of teaching Kindergarten and I continue to be amazed at what 5 and 6 year old children can do.  Last week was filled with ah ha’s and clear reasons why it’s important to be transparent in my teaching practice and how technology can help with this.

During our “Echo Time” the leader of the day is responsible for building words using the SMART board while others use their “tapping hand” to tap out the sounds they hear, then create on their iPad.  The students check their understanding with what has been built in the word box.  Then the leader calls on someone to come up to identify the pattern.  This is a great opportunity here also for young reader’s to represent their idea using SMART tools and then they have an opportunity to justify their reasons behind their thinking.DSCF2118 DSCF2119

Through the use of these tools my students make authentic mistakes and then “change their thinking”.  They’re not afraid to make mistakes because the technological tools make it easy for them to “change their thinking”.  This is modeled and of course we all know that through our mistakes is where the learning takes place.

Later in the week we shared our “How To” stories with the help of our SMART board and document camera.  Both of these tools together give my students opportunities to interact with what they have created, become a leader and build confidence through asking for questions and comments about their work.  When students come to the board to interact with the writing all students make connections and observations.  Now when it’s time to write, the students have a new perspective about what they might change or add.DSCF2052

Just by having a variety of technological tools available, modeling how they can be used and what they can do, my students begin to feel confident about using them because it is just what we do in Kindergarten.

In the photographs above you see the way in which we practice reading each day.  I use a variety of tools that support the reading and writing strategies that we learn in Kindergarten.  The variety of tools give all students an opportunity to use visual, auditory and kinesthetic ways to interact with print. ** An important point here is to note that as an educator I do want to and do monitor the face time my students have using electronic devices.**

We also tweet what we are learning as well as what we are discovering.  I leave our class twitter account open all day.  This way when my students wish to ‘tweet” something to share with others, they can.  Just through this social site we are able to connect and collaborate with others just like us!

Air Server has been a wonderful addition to our number corner time.  My students can remotely connect through our iPads and share their ideas on our SMART board.  After I introduced how Air Server works and what we could do, my students immediately began to explore, problem solve and share through this technology.  Many times I am not always clear about how the technology may or may not work, but through modeling my students begin to see and become flexible in their thinking. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don’t.  Through these experiences as a class, we begin to collaborate and work together to solve a problem.DSCF2124

Air Server In Kindergarten!

Prior to our winter break I was introduced to Air Server.  Wow!  What I am finding out is how easy it is to use as well as how my students are also benefiting from this neat, wireless tool!  What is so amazing is that I can now and my students can remotely access our Smartboard through an iPad.  What an inspirational tool that helps me and my students think, interact and reflect with our ideas.

Now every time I have a new app to share, I can do this remotely!  I can be anywhere in my classroom.  The value of this is now I can be flexible about where I am and also my students can easily interact with the SMARTboard, but are also able to remotely share their observations as well about what we are exploring.air1

For example; During our “Number Corner” time the children use iPads to create patterns, write numbers that come before, after and count using iPads.  Now the leader of the day is able to use their iPad remotely.  So what this means is that the leader displays the number patterns, numbers, etc. and others create what is being asked on their iPad and then they “check in”.  When my students “check in” they are checking their understanding with what the leader of the day is sharing.  This is a wonderful way for all children to be empowered by using a technology that helps others reflect on their own thinking.

So this is what I notice(keep in mind that I have only had 3 days with this tool)

1.  My students are able to make decisions about where they are, physically in the classroom when sharing and checking their understanding.  This encourages all learners to facilitate what they understand.

2.  I notice how excited and engaged my students are about what we are exploring.  This is contagious with all learners in kindergarten.

3.  I see how easily my students can begin to take on leadership roles about what they want to share.  A great self esteem experience for all my students.

4.  Air Server seems to be a pathway for me, my students and others to connect and collaborate with in regards to what we are learning.

5.  The access of what I have on my ipad is available for everyone and everyone has an opportunity to investigate the possibilities of the apps we use.

6.  My students take risks with making observations and connections about their understanding.

7.  What another great way to help promote the idea of being a safe, kind and responsible digital citizen.

8.  I already noticed how a couple of my students began to problem solve “how to” get back on line, when Air Server delayed.  Really!  Just the idea of looking for a way to problem solve a problem in a collaborative way.  Critical thinking happening here for sure!air2

I look forward to blogging more about Air Serve.  I have only used this tool for 3 days!  Looking forward to discovering more using Skype and other tools that enhance learning opportunities for my students.

SMARTboard Awesomeness!

I love my SMARTboard!  A few years ago our school purchased 6 SMARTboards.  The deal was if you were interested in having a board, you needed to apply.  The application was about how you would use the tool, implications for student learning, how it fits with 21st century learning skills and thinking, and lastly, how this might impact transformation for you, the teacher, your students and their families in regards to learning.  This was the beginning of my learning…….
It all begins prior to students arriving in Kindergarten.  As a teacher of young children I am always thinking about where authentic learning opportunities for my students might arise and how to capture and recognize when they might occur.  Then I can better help children think deeply, reflect and celebrate what they discover.  The SMARTboard is a tool that helps with this big idea.  The idea of discovery.  In this post I have written about how this genius tool has made an impact on learning for myself, my students, their families and others.  This is my own personal experience and discovery which continues to change and unfold possibilities everyday that I turn my SMARTboard on.
In Kindergarten we have lots of opportunities for children to manipulate, create and design their learning.  For me this evolves through a variety of hands on tools like manipulatives and a variety of technologies used for math, writing, reading, scientific thinking and exploration.  Children come to school with lots of great ideas about what they want to know, questions and curiosities that they may have and lots of enthusiasm to learn.  The challenge for me is trying to capture the excitement and enthusiasm of what I observe so I can help my students reflect, share, collaborate and question their discoveries and observations.  It is through these experiences that children become invested and engaged in their learning and feel successful and want to take risks.
During an exploration and ease in time I set up the board with dice.  On the dice are dots.  Children take turns touching the dice.  As it rolls children call out the number they see.  Here is the beginning stages of learning how to subitize and count.  The interactive feature of the board provides an excitement because the children are wondering and curious about what number of dots will flash next.  The SMART tools provide an additional interactive experience for the children because they may decide to count the dots on the dice, write the number of dots they see, create an equation and begin exploring with symbols like =,+, etc.
The dice also have letters and numbers too!  During a literacy time children may choose to roll the dice and tell the name of the letter as well as the sound the letter makes.  Again this is an example of how children can begin to practice learning skills they will need to become strong readers. Image The children in the photograph are making connections with their learning, taking turns and learning how to collaborate with a peer around a learning experience.  The interactive features of the board provide children with an opportunity to interact with letters in a fun and engaging way.  This is a great way for all children to be a part of a learning opportunity.  I have never had a child say no or not want to be a part of any learning opportunities with the SMARTboard.  It is a great self-esteem and confidence builder for all children.  I observe children changing their thinking throughout the day, looking at tasks differently and asking questions of each other about their observations.  This is where I see and hear rich, deep and meaningful comments and conversations about a child’s understanding.
The notebook files are handy too.  I am able to create and design learning pages that I want the children to interact with throughout the day.  The key word here is interact.  I love having pages created, but find myself changing and altering pages, so I now create my own.  I always have in my mind what it is that I want the children to interact with and experience with each page.  For me pre-made pages can be really helpful and also limiting. I create my own or choose pages from our school folder where other teachers have shared pages they have created for some of the programs we use at our school.  This is a nice way to share and collaborate with colleagues.
The beauty of the board is that many times the children discover and make connections with ideas that I may not of thought of.  In this

Imagephotograph you will see  a child using the mouse as well as interacting with the board during a Fundations lesson.  Children make words, practice letter and sound recognition as well as increase their understanding of phonemic awareness through this type of experience.  Word play is also very important for young children.  Children love to build words using strategies they have learned and then share there ideas and then others begin to share what they notice and observe also.  Another great learning opportunity that gets at a child’s deeper understanding of what they are learning.
Children love to share things that they find interesting, have questions about and make connections with.  Everyday the children have opportunities throughout the day to share.  This is a great way for children to begin to understand what it feels like to share, reflect and interact with others in a positive ImageImageand collaborative way around their ideas and discoveries.  In the photographs you will see 2 children who made different, but similar observations about a seed pod that another child brought in to share in our classroom.      After the child adjusted the document camera to wear she wanted it she started to talk about what she found, where she found it and what she observed.  Then she asked if anyone else had observations.  So the learning begins…….  One child comes up to the board and says;”I notice…….” He noticed that their were 6 seeds in the pod.  When I asked him “How do you know?” He made tally marks above each seed.  This was a wonderful example of what happens when we, teachers open up opportunities to talk and share about things they find important.  So then another child volunteers to come up and says,”I made a connection…I see 1,2,3,4,5,6 too!”  He used a different way of representing his thinking.  Then almost in chorus all of the children said;”You showed another way of making 6, you get a change your mind card!”  So now all the children have learned 2 different ways to count and represent 6.  This was not a long, lengthy lesson, but a 5 minute window into our day!

I love the SMARTboard.  It is an amazing tool that helps children connect, interact,collaborate and make connections with their learning and each other.  As a teacher I find myself being pleasantly surprised by all the different digital tools that are available to use to help promote learning.  I find myself learning daily along with the children about all the different tools and options that are available to use to enhance learning.  Daily use is really where I have learned the most.  Children have this amazing ability to ask what they want to know and to take risks with things they may not fully understand.  I find that this is where a lot of my own learning and growing happens also.The SMARTboard for me has really been an inspirational tool not only for myself, but for children and their families too!  Check out our class and life studies blogs to see and listen to how we are transforming as learners.  Really Wonderful!
